Atmospheric Awe

A majestic ever-shifting sky of shapes and colors float around me, Sara VanDerBeek has evolved her exploration of interstitial spaces in her enamoring show, Pieced Quilts, Wrapped Forms on view at Metro Pictures. Illuminating the multilayered influence of textiles in this body of work is Karl Lagerfeld’s latest Chanel Haute Couture Collection centered on the atelier, the storied makers whose creative traditions are inherent in each piece. Honoring the expression, fringe possibilities that are held within material and technique, historically considered women’s work, VanDerBeek and Lagerfeld approach this space with fluidity. Melting in and out of perception, forms and patterns permutate around me. VanDerBeek’s sculptures, pillars of process, alluding to the subject of her abstract photography work, escalate the mystery. Cloaked in the marvels of this Chanel Haute Couture Collection, constellations of pearls, silhouetting suede, satin folds give way to fluttering pleats and petals of chiffon. Intensifying the wonders of collaboration, VanDerBeek and Lagerfeld invoke an atmospheric awe around the elements and individuals steeped into each creation.

Highlighting form captured in shifting light, makeup artist Samantha Dametta used Les Beiges Healthy glow multi-colour in Duo N°01 & N°02  for ephemeral luminosity. Soft spectrum Chanel Les 4 Ombres in Tisse Smokey shapes the eye, intensified with Écriture De Chanel Eyeliner Pen Effortless Definition in Noir. An element of color play appears on the lip, a matte purple sun using Rouge Allure Velvet Intense Long Wear Lip Colour in La Romanesque for the first look dissipates into a hot scarlet pink sky, Rouge Allure Intense Long-Wear Lip Colour in Exaltée for lasting impression.
